Background of the assignment
Plan UK is currently in its tenth year of the ‘Real Choices, Real Lives’ cohort study tracking 142 girls from birth in 9 different countries. This is a truly unique study and provides an in-depth understanding of how gender identities are formed and shaped. Due to the longitudinal nature of this study, we are able to track how these roles and identities, beliefs, behaviours and attitudes shift over time, and why.
Plan UK is looking for an experienced rights-based film-maker with demonstrable experience in producing, directing and editing high-calibre documentary films to produce a short film showcasing the important issues raised in our cohort study.
Qualifications/special skills/knowledge
Specialist knowledge and experience of documentary film-making, to include demonstrated production, directing/camera work, and editing. The consultant must be able to demonstrate previous awards or broadcast credits to demonstrate their experience. The consultant must be able to demonstrate their experience/knowledge of international development and rights based issues, and their experience of working on these issues relating to film-making.
Result of the services
The consultant will be responsible for producing, directing and editing a documentary film in at least two of the three regions of our cohort study, showcasing the issues faced by the girls and their families in our cohort study. The issues and focus of the film and countries selected must be agreed in partnership with Plan UK before filming takes place. This film must be delivered to Plan in early 2017 (exact date to be agreed). The consultant will be responsible for coordinating and managing their own film-crew and necessary staff. The consultant will be responsible for sourcing their own equipment, which must be of high quality, for this output.

Consultancy fee
Plan UK seeks budget proposals for this work, including details of the team and daily rates for the team members. The budget should also include provision for equipment hire and related costs.
Work plan
The consultant will agree a timeline and set deadlines with Plan UK. Plan UK will support the consultant with in-country technical support as appropriate. The consultant will abide by Plan UK child protection policy provisions and will take all care to ensure child protection standards and used at all points during filming.
Specific task and responsibilities
The consultant will deliver a short film on the cohort study to Plan UK in early 2017. The consultant will travel to at least two of the regions in the study to film.
The consultant will edit a short film using historical footage to be delivered to Plan no later than 30th September 2017.
