Organization: Plan UK
Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Closing date: 19 May 2016

Plan UK is currently looking for a consultant to support us in an active research piece on gender responsive positive discipline.

Action Research on Gender-Responsive Alternatives to Corporal Punishment in Schools: Terms of Reference

Introduction

Plan International UK believes that a quality education is one that is grounded in respect for human rights and gender equity, that is accessible to all children without discrimination, and one in which all children are encouraged to fulfil their capabilities. It includes a learning environment that is learner-friendly, safe and healthy for all children with mechanisms to prevent and respond to violence.

This action research will be led by the Education Adviser and be supported partly by a consultant for initial primary and secondary research. The primary objective is to explore perceptions of violence and how corporal punishment fits into this. It will result in developing practical guidance on alternative positive discipline interventions and tools which can be piloted and monitored.

The report will include:

I. Secondary research on global examples of good practice regarding the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of positive discipline methods reflecting evidenced behaviour change;

II. Primary action research in one country, exploring the challenges with the change to positive discipline and working with children, adolescents, teachers and parents to develop interventions and tools they think might bring about this behaviour change;

III. The development of locally-implementable tools to monitor the guidance.

The report will be used to inform Plan International UK and more widely international programme approaches to positive discipline, as well as to position Plan International UK in global and UK-based policy developments on the reduction of school-based violence.
